Australian white wine

Australian white wine is mainly grown in the south regions of the country. This is due to the cooler climates that the grapes need to ripen perfectly. As Australian wine is very largely exported, being the fourth largest wine exporter in the world, not all Australian white wine is of a great quality. There are a lot of mass produced factory wines which you will need to steer clear of when choosing a good Australian White Wine. It’s a good idea to pick an Australian white from a smaller long running estate with a good reputation to ensure you get a good quality Australian white.

You can tell a lot from looking at the colour of an Australian white wine, as it is extremely varied from golden to orange to very pale yellow. An Australian white with a deeper colour usually means that the wine will be deep tasting and rich. Also from looking at the colours of these whites you can tell which grapes have been used to create the wine.

The most popular Australian White Wines are

Chardonnay- A classic grape that became the most planted in Australia in the 1980s. An Australian Chardonnay can vary in tastes, depending on where it is grown. It will usually have tastes of vanilla and oak combined with fruity tastes of melon and tropics if from a warmer region, and tastes of citrus and grapefruit from the cooler regions.

Semillion – This white offers very unique tastes and shows the diversity in wine produced from Australia. Again this wine will offer different tastes depending on where the gapes are grown.

Sauvignon Blanc – This Australian white wine is on the rise in grape planting and popularity. This is because Australia’s large land masses can accommodate this grapes preferred ripening climate. Sauvignon Blanc is best grown in a cooler region, but again can have different tastes depending upon where it is grown. In the colder regions it has characteristics of grassy and gooseberry flavours, in the warmer regions it has flavours of passion fruit and acidity.

Chilean Red Wine

Like other New World Wines Chilean Red wine is on the rise in exporting popularity, but only within the last decade. Chilean wine has a long history of domestic wine consumption as the Spanish brought over vines in the 16th century. In the 18th century French and Spanish wine varietals where introduced such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. As the wine production increased within Chilean wine so did the quality and the exportation. Today Chilean wine is the fourth largest exporter of wine to America.

The success of the quality of Chilean Red Wine is the biggest wine success in the world over the past ten years. This is mainly due to the introduction of stainless steel fermentation tanks, and also the use of oak barrels for wine aging.

The popular Chilean Red Wines are

Cabernet Sauvignon - a dry red, with tastes of fruit and oaks. Cabernet Sauvignon is a great companion to red meats, pasta and certain seafood dinners.

Merlot - another bold and dry red, with tastes of berries and spice. Merlot is a great companion to red meats, pasta and certain seafood dinners.

Carmenere – a Chilean red wine which pairs nicely with poultry, pasta, cheese, and pork.

Cabernet Franc – a lighter wine than Cabernet Sauvignon, with berry tastes. This Chilean red wine pairs nicely with poultry, pasta, and vegetable based meals.

A good Argentinian Malbec

As the popularity of Argentina Malbec and other wine varieties from Argentina are rising unfortunately there are a few companies taking advantage of this and producing wines of the back of the rising popularity and reputation that Argentina wine has created for it self in the past few years.

Malbec is a grape used to create red wine varieties and was initially popular in the south region of France. This is where we saw it being blended with other red grapes to produce a Bordeaux or Claret. As the Malbec grape needs a lot of sunshine for it to fully ripen to create a full bodied wine, the production of Malbec wine in France slowly declined. Unfortunately France is unable to maintain the conditions in which the grape needs to grow.

Argentina Malbec has grown in popularity due to its climate conditions. Malbec is being grown in around 20,000 hectares of land around Argentina. Argentina is perfect for growing Malbec as nearly all of its wine growing regions are at an altitude, while being protected from the rainfall from the Andes. Argentina is able to provide the grape with around 320 days of sunshine a year, which is exactly what the grape needs to ripen perfectly.

Today Argentina produces some of the best Argentina Malbec and other Argentina grape blended wines. But you need to be careful when selecting your Argentina Malbec because of the companies who are producing wines on the back of the countries rising wine reputation. Here are some of our favourite Argentina Malbecs:

Eral Bravo Malbec a brand new name from a family in Mendoza which have been producing wine for 30 years. This wine is very impressive.

NQN Malma Colleccion Malbec is another more expensive wine from a boutique winery. This is an exceptional Argentina Malbec from Patagonia.

Susana Balbo Malbec is the wine that Susana Balbo is most famous for. She is one of Argentina’s most innovative wine producers. She has been making Argentinian wine for the last 25 years and this is her most famous.

These Argentina Malbecs are sure to impress you.

Why it is important to use cigar lighters

It is important to use a cigar lighter to light your cigar as using a match or fuel filled lighter will spoil the flavours and aromas of the cigar. Here is our guide on cigar lighters.

A cigar is a finely produced product which should be enjoyed over time with a nice beverage, to experience the aromas and flavours that the cigar has to offer.

A fine cigar will have been through a fine process to get to you. Its tobacco will have been cured through a number of different ways to create different aromas and flavours. It will then have been carefully selected for different parts of the cigar and then finely hand rolled to create a cigar of perfection. The cigar may have then been stored in a special wooden box to mature for a number of years. After this exceptional process lighting your cigar without using proper cigar lighters could ruin the aromas and flavours that have been carefully created.

A match is dipped in sulphur to help it spark; using this to light your cigar can result in this being dragged through the cigar spoiling the flavour and aromas of the cigar with every breath. Also because a match is small and burns slowly its flame is affected by any air movement which surrounds it, this will almost certainly lead to an unevenly lit cigar, which could cause areas of the cigar not to burn properly.

A normal fuel filled cigarette lighter will also damage the flavours and aromas of a cigar. The fuel will leave a taste upon the end of the cigar contaminating it. As this is then drawn throughout the cigar, the taste from the lighter will last from the beginning to the end of your cigar.

It’s important to use cigar lighters to light your cigar as they contain Butane an odourless and tasteless gas. Butane cigar lighters will be filled with purely triple or even more filtered Butane. The best cigar lighters have a double, triple or torch flame of Butane. This will mean that they produce an intense flame of green or blue in colour. This intensive flame will help insure that your cigar is lit evenly, as you light your cigar using a cigar lighter make sure you turn your cigar slowly as you draw in air. If you use cigar lighters to light your cigars you will be sure to enjoy every cigar to its maximum potential, enjoying its unspoilt flavours and aromas from beginning to end.
